Yes it is and this is just one of the many changes made to AutoCAD. It was just a matter of time, really, they removed it from Architecture a few years back. I knew the writing was on the wall for AutoCAD. However, it’s very quick and easy to create a new one since they left the toolbars in the menu file (acad.cuix).
Let’s verify it is really missing first.
Launch AutoCAD and check the Workspace list:
Click the “Workspace Switching” icon (looks like a gear at the bottom right).
Notice “AutoCAD Classic” is missing.
Now enter CUI at the command line to bring up the Custom User Interface dialog.
Still missing… But, it is real easy to create one.
To create your own “AutoCAD Classic” Workspace:
Right click on the Workspace heading and select “New Workspace”
Enter a new Workspace name, “My AutoCAD Classic” and hit the Enter key.
Select your new Workspace name in the left column and click the “Customize Workspace” button in the right hand column. The “Customize Workspace” button will change to “Done”.
Now we are in edit mode. You can tell because most everything on the left (upper left) side has changed to check boxes (click the + sign on the left side of “Toolbars”)!
Select all the toolbars you need. Many of the items will have turned to check boxes at this time, even the Ribbon selections.
Check the items you want… As you check a box, it shows up on the right hand side …
Now let’s turn off the Ribbon.
Scroll down under “Workspace Contents” and Expand “Palettes”, select “Ribbon” and change “Show” to “No”.
Click “Done” once you have all the toolbars and other items turned on that you want turned on and the Ribbon, etc turned off that you do not want to see.
Now to set our new Workspace as the Current and Default Workspace.
Right click your new Workspace name and select “Set current”, then do it again and select “Set Default”.
Click “Apply”, then click “Ok” to close the dialog.
No more Ribbon, I have toolbars and my “My AutoCAD Classic” Workspace is set current!
Enable, disable other toolbars as needed and then click the “Workspace Switching” icon at the bottom of the screen and select “Save Current As…” to resave your settings in the current locations, otherwise they will revert back to the last saved location!
In the “Save Workspace” dialog select your Workspace name.
Click “Save”.
Really? Oh, ok. Click “Replace” and it should remember the settings the next time you exit and come back into AutoCAD.
Done! Just remember to re-save your Workspace after making any changes. Even if you MOVE a toolbar to a different location, or set MENUBAR=1 (enables dropdown menus – File, View, Tools, Help, etc.) , re-save your workspace!
Note: There is a setting in AutoCAD to “Automatically Save Workspace Changes”, I recommend AGAINST this setting. I’ve crashed out of AutoCAD too many times and lost my entire menu because it saved and my menu ended up being a 0kb file with nothing in it.
